The Department of Homeland Security announced the termination of temporary protected status for Ethiopian nationals living in the U.S., according to a December 12 press release.
According to the announcement, Ethiopians now have 60 days to either:
- Voluntarily leave the U.S., or
- Find another legal immigration status
DHS states that those affected can self-report their exits through the CBP Home Mobile App. According to the federal agency, those who voluntarily leave the U.S. may receive a complimentary plane ticket, a $1,000 exit bonus, and “potential future opportunities for legal immigration.”
Kristi Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security, has terminated several TPS designations in 2025. Most recently affected were Haitian and Burmese nationals, whose TPS designations ended earlier this month.
